## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER AIRSPEED IN TURN FROM BASE TO FINAL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, approach - vfr pattern - base leg/base to final
  - in-flight planning/decision - poor, pilot in command (cause)
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - encountered, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

ON TURNING FROM BASE TO FINAL THE PILOT ALLOWED THE AIRSPEED TO DECAY. THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE AN EXCESSIVE SINK RATE AND THE PILOT ELECTED TO CONTINUE THE TURN WHILE ADDING FULL POWER. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO SINK AND STALLED JUST PRIOR TO IMPACT WITH THE TERRAIN. THE PILOT AND ONE PASSENGER REPORTED NO INJURIES, HOWEVER THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900726028769A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900726028769A), Jul 26, 1990: Sud CM170R, Oshkosh, WI, Substantial damage. Stalled turning low final for runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
