## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PIC TO RETAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING SEQUENCE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - crop (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL, VEERED OFF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER DURING A CROSSWIND LANDING. THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING THE ACCIDENT. THE STUDENT PILOT RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT'S STATEMENT, 'A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE PLANE TO GO TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, THEN OFF INTO THE DITCH AND INTO A BEAN FIELD. THE BEANS WERE 2 1/2 TO 3 FT HIGH AND THE DIRT WAS SOFT CAUSING THE PLANE TO NOSE OVER'.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
