## Probable cause

A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO FAILURE OF THE ROCKER ARM BOSSES ON THE #2 CYLINDER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - mech failure/malf, takeoff - initial climb
  - engine assembly,rocker arm/tappet - failure,total (cause)
- Forced landing, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing

## Analysis

SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF, DURING INITIAL CLIMB, THE PLT SAID THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND RUN ROUGH. HE MADE A TURN TO RETURN FOR LANDING, BUT WAS TOO HIGH AND FAST, AND OVERSHOT THE AIRPORT. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED IN A NEARBY FIELD WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. POST-ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE ROCKER ARM BOSSES ON # 2 CYLINDER HAD FAILED, WHICH CAUSED THE PARTIAL POWER LOSS AND ENGINE ROUGHNESS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900916039829A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900916039829A), Sep 16, 1990: Cessna 182P, Troy, MI, Substantial damage. Engine failed on climbout. Turned back to airport but too high and overshot runway. Cylinder rocker arm failed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
