## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S IMPROPER PREFLIGHT PLANNING ENSURING SUFFICIENT FUEL FOR THE INTENDED FLIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, go-around (vfr)
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fuel supply - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
  - emergency procedure - attempted, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
  - terrain condition - grass

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE WAS HIGH ON FINAL APPROACH WHEN THE PILOT ELECTED TO GO AROUND. DURING THE GO AROUND PROCEDURE THE AIRPLANES POWERPLANT QUIT. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A 180 DEGREE TURN IN ORDER TO LAND ON THE OPPOSITE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH THE GROUND DURING THIS MANEUVER. THE ON SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED APPROXIMATELY ONE GALLON OF FUEL REMAINING IN THE AIRPLANES FUEL TANKS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900920041279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900920041279A), Sep 20, 1990: Cessna 172F, Huntington, IN, Destroyed. Lost power on base. Overshot runway and stalled trying for another runway. Failed to check fuel and ran tanks dry.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
