## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO ESTABLISH A PROPER GLIDE PATH, RESULTING IN CONTACT WITH TREES SHORT OF THE INTENDED RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - light condition - dark night
  - proper glidepath - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of familiarity with geographic area, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - object - tree(s)
  - altitude - inadequate, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - high vegetation

## Analysis

PILOT MAKING FIRST LANDING AT UNFAMILIAR FIELD AT NIGHT CIRCLED THE FIELD ONCE AND ALIGNED WITH RUNWAY FOR VFR FINAL APPROACH. AIRCRAFT STRUCK TREES SHORT OF RUNWAY AND FELL TO GROUND AT EDGE OF TREELINE, 270 FEET SHORT OF RUNWAY AND 40 FEET LEFT OF CENTERLINE. NO MECHANICAL DISCREPANCY REPORTED OR DISCOVERED WITH AIRPLANE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900921065349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900921065349A), Sep 21, 1990: Beech F33A, Osage Beach, MO, Substantial damage. Struck trees on final for runway on night approach. Airport surrounded by trees. Pilots first landing at airport.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
