## Probable cause

AN ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED BY A SEIZED PISTON. A FACTOR ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACCIDENT IS THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN A PROPER DESCENT RATE DURING HIS FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, climb
  - engine assembly,piston - seized (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Loss of control - in flight, maneuvering - turn to reverse direction
  - proper descent rate - not maintained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE LANDED HARD AFTER AN ENGINE FAILURE AT ALTITUDE. THE AIRPLANE CAUGHT FIRE AFTER IMPACT. ENGINE DISASSEMBLY REVEALED A SEIZED PISTON IN NUMBER 1 CYLINDER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910119000709A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910119000709A), Jan 19, 1991: Amtr S11PURSUIT, Hays, KS, Substantial damage. Engine siezed on climbout. High sink rate. Impacted ground and burned. NR1 piston had siezed in cylinder.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
