## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. A FACTOR WAS THE EXESSIVE DESCENT RATE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - base leg/base to final
  - descent - excessive, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - grass

## Analysis

WITNESSES OBSERVED THE OPEN COCKPIT HOMEBUILT AIRPLANE TURNING FROM BASE LEG TO FINAL APPROACH FOR A LANDING AT A PRIVATE AIRPORT. DURING THE DESCENT THE AIRPLANE'S LEFT WING COLLIDED WITH THE GROUND AND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO CARTWHEEL. THE AIRPLANE WAS FOUND IN AN INVERTED POSITION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910728030169A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910728030169A), Jul 28, 1991: Amtrrl BREEZYRLU1, Leslie, MI, Substantial damage, 1 fatal. Descended left wing low turning final for short grass strip. Impacted and cartwheeled. Was landing downwind.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
