## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S INTENTIONAL FLIGHT INTO KNOWN ADVERSE WEATHER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, cruise
  - flight into known adverse weather - intentional, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, cruise
  - light condition - dark night
  - weather condition - clouds
  - object - tree(s)
  - proper altitude - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE NON-INSTRUMENT RATED PILOT RECEIVED A 'VFR NOT RECOMMENDED' WEATHER BRIEFING FOR THE PROPOSED FLIGHT INCLUDING THE FORECAST FOR WIDESPREAD IMC CONDITIONS. THE PILOT REPORTED ENCOUNTERING SNOW SHOWERS DURING THE NIGHT FLIGHT, HOWEVER DOES NOT RECALL DETAILS OF THE IMPACT. HE MADE ONE INFLIGHT CALL TO A FSS INQUIRING ABOUT THE WEATHER. IMPACT SCARS INDICATE CONTROLLED FLIGHT INTO THE TREES AND TERRAIN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901109052229A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901109052229A), Nov 9, 1990: Cessna 172P, Hayward, WI, Destroyed. Struck trees trying to maintain ground contact at night in snow rain and fog. Carb icing conditions existed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
