## Probable cause

INADEQUATE AIRCRAFT SERVICING, INADEQUATE AIRCRAFT PREFLIGHT, FUEL CONTAMINATION, AND UNSUITABLE SOFT TERRAIN IN WHICH TO EFFECT AN EMERGENCY LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering - aerial application
  - aircraft service - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fuel system - contamination (cause)
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - none suitable (cause)
  - terrain condition - soft (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT HAD JUST COMPLETED A SWATH RUN DURING THE AERIAL APPLICATION FLIGHT WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT AT APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET AGL. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING IN SOFT, CULTIVATED FIELD. THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER AFTER 220 FEET OF LANDING ROLL. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED WATER CONTAMINATION IN THE AIRCRAFT FUEL SYSTEM. THE OPERATOR'S UNDERGROUND FUEL STORAGE FACILITY WAS INSPECTED, AND CONTAINED EIGHT INCHES OF WATER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910817034589A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910817034589A), Aug 17, 1991: Scwzer G164B, Minto, ND, Substantial damage. Engine quit on pull up from spray run. Nosed over in soft field. Water in fuel system and operators storage system

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
