## Probable cause

FUEL CONSUMPTION CALCULATIONS MISJUDGED BY THE PIC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE A TAILWIND LANDING AND NO SUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, takeoff - initial climb
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (contributing factor)
  - fuel consumption calculations - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

AFTER FLYING LOCALLY FOR OVER TWO HOURS, DOING TAKE OFFS AND LDGS ON LOCAL STRIPS, THE ENGINE FAILED SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF AT ABOUT 200 AGL. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED, DOWNWIND, ON A ROUGH FARM FIELD, WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FUEL TANKS TO BE EMPTY OF AUTOMOBILE FUEL. IN ADDITION A BLOCKED FUEL TANK VENT WAS DISCOVERED ALONG WITH WATER IN THE FUEL SYSTEM.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
