## Probable cause

FUEL EXHAUSTION DUE TO RE-FUELING NOT PERFORMED BY THE PIC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE FUEL CONSUMPTION CALCULATIONS MISJUDGED BY THE PIC.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)

  - fuel consumption calculations - misjudged, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE RETURNING FROM A ROUND ROBIN CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, WITHOUT REFUELING, THE PLT SAID THAT THE ENGINE FAILED. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED IN A WHEAT FIELD WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FUEL SYSTEM TO BE EMPTY OF USABLE FUEL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901202052299A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901202052299A), Dec 2, 1990: Cessna 182M, Howell, MI, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel en route. Nosed over on forced landing in a wheat field.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
