## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING ACCELERATION FOR TAKEOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff
  - touch-and-go - attempted
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - snow covered

## Analysis

A SOLO STUDENT PILOT PRACTICING TOUCH-AND-GO LANDINGS, APPLIED POWER FOR TAKEOFF AND THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED LEFT. THE PILOT REDUCED POWER TO IDLE AND APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER, BUT THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY. DEPARTING THE RUNWAY, THE AIRPLANE ROLLED INTO SNOW COVER AND NOSED OVER. NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION WAS REPORTED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910111000429A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910111000429A), Jan 11, 1991: Cessna 152, St Cloud, MN, Substantial damage. Student lost control on power application on touch and go. Ran off runway into snow and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
