## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE STUDENT PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT, WHICH RESULTED IN A GROUND SWERVE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT SAID THAT ON HIS SECOND SOLO FLIGHT, HE BECAME CONFUSED AS TO THE FUNCTION OF THE RUDDER PEDALS AND BRAKES. HE LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL ON THE LANDING ROLL-OUT, AND THE AIRCRAFT SWERVED OFF THE RUNWAY AND WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910209009289A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910209009289A), Feb 9, 1991: Cessna 152, Lawrence, KS, Substantial damage. Second solo became confused as to funcion of rudder and brakes on landing rollout. Veered off runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
