## Probable cause

REFUELING NOT PERFORMED RESULTING IN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE MISJUDGED FUEL CONSUMPTION CALCULATIONS AND NON SUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - fuel consumption calculations - misjudged, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing

## Analysis

THE PILOT SAID THAT ABOUT 7 MILES FROM HER DESTINATION, THE ENGINE LOST POWER. AN EMERGENCY LANDING WAS ATTEMPTED IN A FARM FIELD WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION BY THE FAA REVEALED THE ENGINE RUN UP TO BE SATISFACTORY, AND THE FUEL TANKS WERE EMPTY OF USABLE FUEL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910407009139A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910407009139A), Apr 7, 1991: Cessna 152, Oshkosh, WI, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel seven miles short of destination. Landed in plowed field and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
