## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO SELECT A PROPER TOUCHDOWN POINT. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS INADEQUATE RUNWAY MAINTENANCE BY AIRPORT PERSONNEL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, landing
  - terrain condition - hidden obstruction(s)
  - runway maintenance - inadequate, airport personnel (contributing factor)
  - proper touchdown point - not selected, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

FROM BASE LEG, THE PILOT OBSERVED THE LEFT AND RIGHT RUNWAY END MARKERS ON THE SOD STRIP AND LONG GRASS BETWEEN THEM. A SIMILAR MARKER ON CENTERLINE AT RUNWAY END WAS VISIBLE JUST BEFORE TOUCHDOWN. THE AIRPLANE'S RIGHT MAIN GEAR STRUCK THE CENTER MARKER 8 INCHES BELOW ITS TOP DURING LANDING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910605020749A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910605020749A), Jun 5, 1991: Piper PA28R200, Pulaski, WI, Substantial damage. Struck a runway end marker barrel on final for landing on grass strip. Barrel hidden by weeds.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
