## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING LANDING. FACTORS IN THE ACCIDENT WERE THE PILOT'S DISCONTINUING HIS CROSSWIND COMPENSATION AND HIS LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THE TYPE OF OPERATION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind
  - compensation for wind conditions - discontinued, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - lack of total experience in type operation, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

A SOLO STUDENT PILOT FLEW TO A NEARBY FIELD FOR A FULL STOP LANDING. THE PILOT COMPENSATED FOR A RIGHT CROSSWIND ON FINAL WITH WING DOWN INTO THE WIND. NEARING THE FLARE, THE PILOT LEVELED THE WINGS FOR THE ROUNDOUT AND TOUCHDOWN. THE AIRPLANE LANDED IN A LEFT DRIFT, WITH THE LEFT WHEEL OFF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED HE COULD NOT GET THE WHEEL BACK ON THE RUNWAY AND ALLOWED THE AIRPLANE TO ROLL ONTO THE GRASS. THE NOSEWHEEL ENTERED A DITCH, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910730031439A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910730031439A), Jul 30, 1991: Cessna 172, Oberlin, KS, Substantial damage. Lost control landing. Ran off runway and nosed over. Was landing downwind.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
