## Probable cause

FRACTURE OF A CONNECTING ROD RESULTING IN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise - normal
  - engine assembly,connecting rod - fractured (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXPERIENCED ENGINE POWER LOSS RETURNING FROM AN AERIAL APPLICATION FLIGHT. THE FORCED LANDING IN A ROUGH-SURFACED PASTURE RESULTED IN STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. ENGINE DISASSEMBLY SHOWED THE NUMBER 8 ROD HAD SEPARATED ACROSS THE I-BEAM SECTION AND FLAILED AGAINST ADJACENT PARTS OF THE ENGINE INTERIOR.
