## Probable cause

INADVERTENT STALL AND SPIN WITH INADEQUATE ALTITUDE FOR RECOVERY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - stall/spin - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - grass
  - altitude - inadequate (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS ON HIS FIRST FLIGHT IN THIS MODEL GLIDER AND THE LAUNCH WAS BY GROUND TOW. THE PILOT STATED THE GLIDER CLIMBED TO 200 FEET AND 50 KNOTS AND WOULDN'T CLIMB OR ACCELERATE ANY MORE. AS HE RELEASED TOW ROPE, HE REALIZED THAT HE HAD ENTERED A SPIN. ALTITUDE WAS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR FULL RECOVERY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920816031559A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920816031559A), Aug 16, 1992: Amtr BG12B, Lake Village, IN, Substantial damage. Too slow on auto tow climb. Cut loose but stalled and spun to ground. First flight in type high performance glider.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
