## Probable cause

ENGINE LOSS OF POWER FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR A FORCED LANDING WAS A FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT SAID HE HAD JUST DEPARTED THE AIRPORT AND CLIMBED TO ABOUT 800 FEET AGL WHEN THE ACFT LOST POWER. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED, GEAR UP, WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL AIRFRAME DAMAGE. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION FAILED TO REVEAL ANY MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS OR FUEL SUPPLY SHORTAGE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920118000799A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920118000799A), Jan 18, 1992: Cessna 177RG, Indianapolis, IN, Substantial damage. Lost power on climbout. Landed on city street gear up. Cause power loss undetermined.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
