## Probable cause

A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AS A RESULT OF A CONNECTING ROD FAILURE. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE POWER LINES AND TREES IN THE PATH OF THE SELECTED EMERGENCY LANDING SITE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise
  - engine assembly,connecting rod - failure,total (cause)

  - object - wire,transmission (contributing factor)
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED HE NOTICED THE OIL TEMPERATURE WAS A LITTLE ABOVE NORMAL SO HE HAD LANDED AND REMOVED THE WINTERIZATION KIT ON THE AIRPLANE. SHORTLY AFTER RESUMPTION OF THE FLIGHT, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, AND SMOKE DEVELOPED. HE SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO THE NEAREST AIRPORT. UNABLE TO REACH THE AIRPORT, A FORCED LANDING WAS ATTEMPTED TO A RESIDENTIAL STREET. THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED A POWERLINE AND TREE AND CAME TO REST IN THE FRONT YARD OF A RESIDENCE. POSTACCIDENT INSPECTION REVEALED A BROKEN CONNECTING ROD ON THE #3 JOURNAL AND A HOLE IN THE CRANKCASE.

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920119000809A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920119000809A), Jan 19, 1992: Cessna 175, Warren, MI, Substantial damage. Lost power. Smoke in cabin. Landed on city street striking powerline and trees. Engine had thrown connecting rod.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
