## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT. AN ASSOCIATED FACTOR IS WEATHER CONDUCIVE TO CARBURETOR ICING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WAS EXPERIENCED DURING THE LOCAL PERSONAL FLIGHT. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE DURING WHICH THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED TREES. POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION FAILED TO REVEAL ANY MECHANICAL FAILURE/MALFUNCTION OR FUEL SHORTAGE PROBLEMS. LOCAL CONDITIONS WERE CONDUCIVE TO CARBURETOR ICING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920206001979A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920206001979A), Feb 6, 1992: Cessna 152, Howell, MI, Substantial damage. Failed to use carburetor heat on long descent. Engine quit. Struck trees on forced landing. Carb icing prevalent.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
