## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO REFUEL THE AIRPLANE. A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE ROUGH TERRAIN ON WHICH THE LANDING WAS MADE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER APPROXIMATELY 7 MILES FROM THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE DURING WHICH THE NOSE GEAR SHEARED OFF AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER. POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION REVEALED NO FUEL IN THE FUEL TANKS. THE AIRPLANE WAS FLOWN 4.9 HOURS SINCE IT WAS LAST REFUELED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920228004629A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920228004629A), Feb 28, 1992: Cessna 172M, Manhattan, KS, Substantial damage. Engine quit near destination. Nosed over in a small field. Fuel tanks empty of useable fuel.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
