## Probable cause

THE PILOT DELAYED INITIATING A GO-AROUND. FACTORS WERE ICING CONDITIONS AND INADEQUATE WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE WHICH RESULTED IN RESTRICTED VISUAL LOOKOUT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - anti-ice/deice system,windshield - inadequate (contributing factor)
  - visual lookout - restricted, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - go-around - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
- Complete gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT AT AN ALTITUDE OF 200 TO 300 FEET AGL ON FINAL APPROACH, THE WINDSHIELD BECAME OBSCURED AND HIS FORWARD VISIBILITY WAS RESTRICTED. HE ADVANCED THE POWER TO GO-AROUND BUT THE AIRPLANE SETTLED HARD ONTO THE RUNWAY. THE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST 210 FEET DOWN THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED LIGHT FREEZING RAIN WAS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE APPROACH AND THE WINDSHIELD HEAT ON THE PILOT'S SIDE WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY.

- [Accident 19920228004679A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920228004679A), Feb 28, 1992: Cessna 340CESSNA, Ashland, WI, Substantial damage. Impacted 300 feet short of runway. Pilot blamed ice on windshield blocked vision.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
