## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO FULLY EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR USING MANUAL PROCEDURES AFTER AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURE. A FACTOR ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACCIDENT IS THE PILOT MISREADING A PUBLISHED EMERGENCY PROCEDURE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, cruise
  - electrical system,alternator - failure,total
- Complete gear collapsed, landing
  - emergency procedure - misread, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - gear extension - not attained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXTENDED THE GEAR MANUALLY FOLLOWING A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL FAILURE. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE TURNED THE LANDING GEAR HANDCRANK UNTIL HE FELT HEAVY RESISTANCE AND HE THOUGHT THE LANDING GEAR WAS DOWN AND LOCKED; HOWEVER, DURING LANDING, THE GEAR COLLAPSED. POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRPLANE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DISCLOSED A BROKEN BRUSH IN THE ALTERNATOR.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
