## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO FOLLOW EMERGENCY PROCEDURES, AND THE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE ELECTRICAL ARCING, AND THE LACK OF TOTAL EXPERIENCE IN THE TYPE OF AIRCRAFT BY THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, climb
  - electrical system,electric wiring - arcing (cause)
- Fire, descent - emergency
  - misc eqpt/furnishings - fire
  - emergency procedure - not followed, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command
- Main gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - electrical system,battery - inadequate
  - gear down and locked - not attained, pilot in command

## Analysis

WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT AT 3,000 FEET, ELECTRICAL ARCING STARTED UNDER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND DIVERTED TO AN ALTERNATE DESTINATION. THE ARCING CONTINUED AND AN IN-FLIGHT FIRE ENSUED. THE PILOT CONTINUED AN EMERGENCY DESCENT AND ON TOUCHDOWN THE MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED. SUBSEQUENT EXAMINATION FAILED TO REVEAL THE NATURE OF THE ELECTRICAL ARCING. THE FIRE WAS SUPPORTED BY IGNITION OF CARPETING AND UPHOLSTERY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920328007659A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920328007659A), Mar 28, 1992: Cessna TR182, Joliet, IL, Destroyed. Sparks under panel and fire near firewall. Landed nearest airport and burned. Master switch still on.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
