## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S IMPROPER USE OF THE CARBURETOR HEAT CONTROL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, takeoff - initial climb
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
  - fuel system,carburetor - ice (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR WAS GIVING INSTRUCTION TO THE PRIVATE PILOT IN TAKEOFF AND LANDINGS. SHORTLY AFTER THE FOURTH TAKEOFF, AT AN ESTIMATED ALTITUDE OF 800' AGL, THE ENGINE BACKFIRED AND LOST POWER. CARBURETOR HEAT WAS APPLIED AFTER THE POWER LOSS. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE TO A ROUGH FIELD, AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER DURING THE GROUND ROLL. AN INSPECTION AND RUN-UP OF THE ENGINE FAILED TO DISCLOSE ANY MECHANICAL ANOMALIES. PREVAILING METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WERE CONDUCIVE TO THE FORMATION OF SERIOUS CARBURETOR ICING.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
