## Probable cause

A STALL FOLLOWING A DOWNWIND TAKEOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of familiarity with geographic area, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - wrong runway - inadvertent use, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - grass

## Analysis

THE PILOT BECAME DISORIENTED WHILE TAXIING FOR TAKEOFF AT AIRPORT WHICH WAS NOT HIS HOME BASE, AND TOOK OFF DOWNWIND. PILOT REALIZED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS NOT GOING TO CLEAR TREES AND POPULATED AREA AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY, AND ATTEMPTED A TURN TO THE LEFT. THE AIRCRAFT STALLED AND CRASHED ON A GOLF COURSE ADJACENT TO THE AIRPORT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920428012179A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920428012179A), Apr 28, 1992: Cessna 140, Grain Valley, MO, Substantial damage. Tired depart downwind. Unable to climb. Elected to bank toward golf course. Stalled. Hit ground wing and nose low.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
