## Probable cause

WAS THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE PILOT'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN TAIL WHEEL AIRPLANES AND THE GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING A LANDING IN GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS. THE AIRPLANE TRAVELED THROUGH AN OPEN GRASS FIELD AND INTO A CREEK WHERE IT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THIS FLIGHT WAS THE PILOT'S FIRST SOLO FLIGHT IN A TAIL-WHEEL AIRPLANE FOLLOWING THREE HOURS OF DUAL INSTRUCTION.

## Other investigations on N1652G (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL89LA156](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL89LA156), Jun 2, 1989: Champion 7GCBC (N1652G), Myrtle Beach, SC, substantial damage. Probable cause: THE IMPROPER INSTALLATION/MODIFICATION OF THE BANNER TOW SYSTEM, WHICH JAMMED THE RUDDER DURING A LANDING. THE WIND AND TERRAIN CONDITIONS WERE RELATED FACTORS.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
