## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY COMPENSATE FOR THE WIND CONDITIONS AND FAILURE TO PROPERLY FLARE THE AIRPLANE. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE CROSSWIND CONDITION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED SHE WAS AWARE OF THE CROSSWIND CONDITION WHICH EXISTED DURING THE LANDING AND WAS COMPENSATING BY CRABBING THE AIRPLANE. SHE STATED THAT SHE THOUGHT SHE ENCOUNTERED A GUST OF WIND DURING THE FLARE AS THE AIRPLANE SETTLED TO THE RUNWAY ON THE MAIN GEAR. IT THEN BOUNCED AND SETTLED AGAIN ON THE NOSE GEAR WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY COLLAPSED. THE AIRPLANE THEN VEERED OFF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920628022029A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920628022029A), Jun 28, 1992: Cessna 152, East Tawan, MI, Substantial damage. High sink rate on final. Bounced, came down hard on nose wheel collapsing same. Veered off runway. Nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
