## Probable cause

THE PASSENGER'S INATTENTION TO THE PROPELLER ARC AND THE PILOT'S IMPROPER PROCEDURE IN DISEMBARKING A PASSENGER WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Propeller/rotor contact to person, standing - engine(s) operating
  - single engine aircraft
  - procedures/directives - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - visual lookout - inattentive, passenger (cause)

## Analysis

AFTER A FLIGHT, THE PILOT STOPPED ON THE RAMP WITH ENGINE RUNNING AND ATTEMPTED TO GAIN THE ATTENTION OF GROUND PERSONNEL TO ATTEND TO A DISCREPANT CONDITION ON HIS AIRPLANE. WHEN THIS DID NOT SUCCEED, HE ASKED THE PASSENGER (HIS WIFE) TO GO AND BRING SOMEONE TO THE AIRPLANE. SHE GOT OUT THE RIGHT DOOR AND WALKED INTO THE PROPELLER ARC.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920705023649A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920705023649A), Jul 5, 1992: Cessna 177B, Dwight, IL, 1 fatal. Passenger got out to summon help for electrical problem. Pilot kept engine running. Passenger walked into propeller

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
