## Probable cause

MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSE AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE OF A LANDING GEAR HYDRAULIC PUMP SEAL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, approach
  - hydraulic system,seal - ruptured (cause)
  - fluid,hydraulic - loss,total
- Main gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - landing gear,main gear - unlocked (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS MAKING PATTERN APPROACH FOR LANDING. HE STATED THAT HE VISUALLY CONFIRMED THE LANDING GEAR WAS DOWN. DURING LANDING ROLLOUT BOTH MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT A SEAL ON THE LANDING GEAR HYDRAULIC PUMP HAD RUPTURED RESULTING IN LOSS OF SYSTEM FLUID.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920905035359A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920905035359A), Sep 5, 1992: Cessna 172RG, Chicago/Wheelin, IL, Substantial damage. Gear down indication but horn on landing approach. Went around beleived gear ok. Gear hydraulic pump seal ruptured.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
