## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL.

  - diverted attention, pilot in command
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ravine

## Analysis

THE PILOT LANDED WITH FLAPS. AS THE AIRPLANE ROLLED OUT, THE PILOT LOOKED DOWN AND REACHED FOR THE MANUAL LEVER TO RAISE THE FLAPS. WHEN SHE NEXT LOOKED ABOVE THE CONTROL PANEL, THE AIRPLANE WAS HEADED RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY AND DOWNHILL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921022043149A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921022043149A), Oct 22, 1992: Piper PA20, Weeping Water, NE, Substantial damage. Ran off runway while reaching down to raise flaps on landing roll. Failed to maintain outside reference.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
