## Probable cause

IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT BY THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - fuel system,carburetor - ice
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - roll

## Analysis

WHILE EN ROUTE BACK TO THE AIRSTRIP AFTER A LOCAL FLIGHT A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WAS EXPERIENCED. THE PILOT STATED HE APPLIED CARBURETOR HEAT AND ENGINE POWER WAS REGAINED. AFTER REMOVING CARBURETOR HEAT, THE ENGINE RPM AGAIN DECREASED. AFTER THIS OCCURRED TWO MORE TIMES, THE PILOT CHOSE A FIELD IN WHICH TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING. THE TERRAIN WAS ROUGH AND DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE RIGHT WING CONTACTED THE GROUND, AND THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. ICING PROBABILITY CHARTS INDICATE THAT THE EXISTING TEMPERATURE/DEWPOINT OF 25 DEGREES AND 16 DEGREES RESPECTIVELY WAS CONDUCIVE TO THE FORMATION OF LIGHT CARBURETOR ICING AT GLIDE AND CRUISE POWER SETTINGS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921206049469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921206049469A), Dec 6, 1992: Cessna 150F, Oshtemo, MI, Substantial damage. Engine lost power. Nosed up landing in rough field after nose wheel collapsed. Carb icing conditions existed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
