## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S DELAYED USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT. THE SOFT TERRAIN IN THE LANDING AREA WAS A FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions
  - fuel system,carburetor - ice (cause)
  - carburetor heat - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)

## Analysis

STUDENT PILOT ON A CROSS COUNTRY EXPERIENCED A PARTIAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND COULD NOT MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A SNOW COVERED FIELD, AND NOSED OVER DURING LANDING ROLLOUT. THE ENGINE WAS EXAMINED BY THE FAA, AND NO CONDITIONS WHICH WOULD PRECLUDE NORMAL OPERATION WERE FOUND. THE PILOT TOLD THE FAA INSPECTOR THAT SHE DID NOT USE THE CARBURETOR HEAT UNTIL JUST BEFORE SHE LANDED. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 38 DEGREES F, AND THE DEW POINT WAS 28 DEGREES F. THESE CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR CARBURETOR ICING IN CRUISE FLIGHT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930228025709A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930228025709A), Feb 28, 1993: Cessna 150M, Stanley, ND, Substantial damage. Engine quit in cruise flight. Nosed over in muddy field on forced landing. Did not use carb heat. Icing prevalent.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
