## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO REFUEL THE AIRPLANE EN ROUTE WHICH RESULTED IN AN INADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY FOR THE FLIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, approach
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion
  - fuel supply - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WAS EXPERIENCED WHILE ON APPROACH TO RUNWAY 32 AT THE HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE IN A FIELD DURING WHICH THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED ROUGH TERRAIN AND THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. THE PILOT STATED AND A POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THE FUEL TANKS WERE EMPTY.
