## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER RUNWAY ALIGNMENT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - object - vehicle (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - crosswind
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
  - remedial action - performed, pilot in command(cfi)

## Analysis

THE INSTRUCTOR (CFI) WAS DEMONSTRATING A SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. BOTH THE INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT REPORTED SEEING THE MOWING TRACTOR OFF THE WEST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY PRIOR TO THE TAKEOFF. BOTH STATED THAT AS THE NOSE OF THE AIRPLANE WAS LOWERED AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE, THEY SAW THE TRACTOR DIRECTLY TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE. THE CFI STATED HE VEERED RIGHT IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE TRACTOR; HOWEVER, THE LEFT WING CONTACTED THE ROLL BAR OF THE TRACTOR. THE CFI REDUCED THE POWER AND LANDED ON THE REMAINING RUNWAY. THE TRACTOR OPERATOR STATED HE SAW THE AIRPLANE TAKING OFF AND WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO MOVE FURTHER AWAY FROM THE RUNWAY WHEN THE AIRPLANE VEERED TO THE LEFT AND STRUCK THE TRACTOR. A SLIGHT RIGHT CROSSWIND WAS PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930513013829A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930513013829A), May 13, 1993: Cessna 150L, Washington, MO, Substantial damage. On lift off left wing struck tractor that was mowing adjacent to runway. No radio or high visible paint on tractor.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
