## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S PREMATURE LIFTOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - lift-off - premature, pilot in command (cause)
  - climb - not attained, pilot in command
  - object - fence post
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - crop

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED NORMAL ACCELERATION AND LIFTOFF FROM THE 2,800' GRASS STRIP. SHORTLY AFTER LIFTOFF, AT AN ESTIMATED ALTITUDE OF 20', HE SAID '...I SUDDENLY LOST LIFT.' HE WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE, AND COLLIDED WITH A FENCE POST IN A FIELD LOCATED OFF THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE SUBSEQUENTLY CRASHED INTO A SOYBEAN FIELD. NO PREIMPACT MECHANICAL DIFFICULTIES WERE CLAIMED BY THE PILOT OR DISCOVERED DURING THE POSTACCIDENT INVESTIGATION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930615018129A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930615018129A), Jun 15, 1993: Piper PA38112, Newark, IL, Substantial damage. Settled after liftoff. Struck fence post. Crashed in adjacent soybean field. Blamed downdraft. No wind report.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
