## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S INABILITY TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DUE TO INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - flight control,aileron attachment - disconnected
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - crosswind (cause)
- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT DURING TAKEOFF IN A 12 KT, 80 DEGREE LEFT CROSSWIND, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT STATED THAT EVEN AFTER APPLYING STICK AND RUDDER CONTROL THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO THE RIGHT. THE RIGHT WING STRUCK A RUNWAY LIGHT/SIGN JUST AS THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO GET AIRBORNE. AFTER THE PILOT STOPPED THE AIRCRAFT ON GRASS TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, THE LEFT AILERON WAS FOUND TO BE DISCONNECTED FROM ITS ACTUATING ARM.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The pilot misjudged his altitude and airspeed during an emergency landing attempt. Factors associated with this accident were a manufacturing defect in the magneto drive coupling and a total failure…
