## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE ENGINE-DRIVEN FUEL PUMP. A FACTOR WAS THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO SELECT THE AUXILIARY FUEL PUMP.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise
  - fuel system,pump - deteriorated (cause)
  - fuel boost pump selector position - not selected, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - fluid,fuel - starvation
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - none suitable
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - wire,transmission
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE'S ENGINE LOST POWER DURING CRUISE AT 2000 FEET AGL. THE PILOT MANEUVERED TO A HIGHWAY, SAW TRAFFIC AND TURNED TO A FIELD. ON FINAL THE PILOT SAW A POWER LINE AND ASSESSED HE COULD NOT MANEUVER TO AVOID. DISASSEMBLY OF THE MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP SHOWED A SPLIT SEAL ON A DIAPHRAGM SHAFT. THE PILOT DID NOT RECALL SELECTING THE AUXILIARY PUMP AFTER ONSET OF THE POWER LOSS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930620019519A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930620019519A), Jun 20, 1993: Cessna STC150, Wilton, ND, Substantial damage. Lost power. Struck powerline on forced landing. Fuel pump seal split due age. Did not remember using boost pump.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
