## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER GLIDE PATH, AND HER FAILURE TO ATTAIN THE PROPER TOUCH DOWN POINT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Undershoot, landing - flare/touchdown
  - light condition - dark night
  - lack of familiarity with geographic area, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - proper glidepath - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper touchdown point - not attained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

AFTER LOCATING THE AIRPORT AT POINT LOOKOUT, MISSOURI, THE PILOT CIRCLED TO LOSE ALTITUDE TO LAND. SHE STATES SHE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT UNICOM ON THE FIELD FOR AN AIRPORT ADVISORY, BUT GOT NO ANSWER. SINCE SHE DID NOT HEAR ANY OTHER TRAFFIC IN THE AREA, SHE PROCEEDED TO MAKE A PATTERN FOR LANDING. SHE CAME IN TOO FAST AND THE PLANE BALLOONED, SO SHE ELECTED FOR A GO-AROUND. ON HER NEXT APPROACH, SHE LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH AN EMBANKMENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930625020619A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930625020619A), Jun 25, 1993: Cessna 172N, Point Lookout, MO, Substantial damage. Too high and fast on first try. Went around but landed short on second try. Struck embankment.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
