## Probable cause

the loss of engine power due to the failure of the number two cylinder.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise
  - engine assembly,cylinder - fractured (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,nose gear - overload

## Analysis

WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT, THE AIRPLANE EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT THE NEAREST AIRPORT. WHEN HE REALIZED THAT THE AIRPLANE WOULD NOT MAKE THE AIRPORT, HE ELECTED TO LAND ON A FIELD. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THE #2 CYLINDER HAD FRACTURED AT MID BARREL.

## Factual narrative

On June 17, 1994, about 1400 central daylight time, a Piper PA- 28, N5025S, experienced a loss of engine power while en route from Kearney, Nebraska, to Washington, Missouri. The pilot made a forced landing on a field approximately two miles east of St. Joseph Airport, St. Joseph, Missouri. The airplane was substantially damaged. The pilot received minor injuries. The 14 CFR Part 91 flight operated in visual meteorological conditions on an IFR flight plan.

The pilot attempted to make an emergency landing at St. Joseph Airport. When he realized that the airplane would not make the airport, he elected to land on a field. During the landing roll, the airplane's nose gear collapsed. Postaccident examination of the engine revealed the #2 cylinder had fractured at mid barrel.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19940617016359A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19940617016359A), Jun 17, 1994: Piper PA28R200, St Joseph, MO, Substantial damage. Engine problems en route. Elected land in bean field. Collapsed nose gear. NR2 cylinder separated at mid barrel.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
