## Probable cause

the pilot's use of excessive braking during the landing roll. A factor associated with the accident was the pilot's failure to maintain directional control of the airplane during the landing roll.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - brakes(normal) - excessive, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT WHILE LANDING, THE AIRPLANE PULLED TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE THEN APPLIED EXCESSIVE LEFT BRAKE WHICH CAUSED THE TAILWHEEL AIRPLANE TO NOSE OVER.

## Factual narrative

On August 19, 1995, at 1600 central daylight time (CDT), a Stinson 108-3, N6911M, was substantially damaged while landing at Tribune Municipal Airport, Tribune, Kansas. The pilot reported no injuries. The local 14 CFR Part 91 flight originated from a private airstrip in Tribune, Kansas, at 1545 CDT. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and no flight plan was filed.

In a written statement, the pilot reported that after practicing several takeoffs and landings at his private grass strip, he flew to Tribune Municipal Airport to practice several more on an asphalt runway. The pilot stated that during his first landing at Tribune, the airplane pulled to the right after touchdown. "I applied excessive left brake, causing the tailwheel aircraft to nose over," the pilot stated.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19950819026819A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19950819026819A), Aug 19, 1995: Univar 1083, Tribune, KS, Substantial damage. Used excessive brake landing to control a swerve. Aircraft nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
