## Probable cause

the pilot's failure to maintain directional control during takeoff.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - ground

## Analysis

The pilot stated that during rotation the airplane "turned right." He attempted to correct but the airplane continued off the runway to the right and impacted terrain.

## Factual narrative

On November 20, 2004, approximately 1130 mountain standard time, a Farrell Lancair LC3, N41MF, piloted by a private pilot, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain during takeoff roll from Las Cruces International Airport (LRU), Las Cruces, New Mexico. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The personal flight was being conducted under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 without a flight plan. The pilot and passenger reported no injuries. The cross-country flight, en route to Alamogordo, New Mexico, was originating at the time of the accident.

According to the pilot's accident report, as the aircraft was rotated for takeoff on runway 26, it "turned right." The pilot attempted to correct, but the airplane continued off the runway to the right. The nose and left main landing gear separated and the left main wing spar was bent aft. An examination of the airplane's systems, conducted by the FAA, revealed no anomalies.
