## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO FOLLOW PUBLISHED PROCEDURES WHEN HE INADVERTENTLY SHUT OFF THE MAGNETOS WHILE ON FINAL APPROACH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - ignition system,magneto - switched off (cause)
  - powerplant controls - inadvertent deactivation, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - flare/touchdown
  - object - fence post

## Analysis

THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND ON A ROADWAY. DURING FINAL APPROACH FOR LANDING THE PILOT INADVERTENTLY SWITCHED OFF THE MAGNETOS. THE SUBSEQUENT TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER NECESSITATED A LANDING SHORT OF THE PLANNED LANDING AREA. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED AGAINST FENCE POSTS AT A CATTLE GURD INSTALLED ON THE ROADWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900830046279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900830046279A), Aug 30, 1990: Amtr AVIDFLYER, Trinidad, CO, Substantial damage. Wing struck a cattle guard post while landing on a road. Added power to clear post but had bumped switch to off.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
