## Probable cause

PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - turbulence (contributing factor)
- Loss of control - in flight, descent - uncontrolled
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - runway

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE PILOT ENCOUNTERED A WHIRLWIND WHILE ON FINAL TO HIS RANCH AIRSTRIP. HE SAID THE TURBULENCE WAS SEVERE AND THE PLANE LANDED HARD, DAMAGING THE LANDING GEAR, THE PROPELLER, AND TEARING THE LEFT WING LOOSE AT THE ROOT. THE PILOT ORIGINALLY REPORTED 'MINOR' DAMAGE, BUT LATER REPORTED 'SUBSTANTIAL' DAMAGE TO THE FAA.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
