## Probable cause

AN OVER TEMPERATURE OF THE INLET FUEL LINE RESULTING IN FUEL STARVATION (VAPOR LOCK) IN THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE LACK OF A SUITABLE LANDING AREA.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - fuel system,line - overtemperature (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

N64UV SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING AN EMERGENCY LANDING, IN A FIELD NEAR THE GRAND FORKS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, NORTH DAKOTA. DURING FINAL APPROACH TO LANDING, THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED. THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK OVER THE CONTROLS. HE SAID THE ENGINE DID NOT RESTART AND HE WAS FORCED TO LAND ON AN UNSUITABLE LANDING SURFACE. DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER. INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE INDICATED THAT THE POER LOSS WAS DUE TO VAPOR LOCK IN THE INLET FUEL LINE TO THE ELECTRIC BOOST PUMP. SUBSEQUENT ENGINE TEST RUN WAS SUCCESSFUL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900421010529A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900421010529A), Apr 21, 1990: Mudry CAP10B, Grand Forks, ND, Substantial damage. Completed aerobatic dual throttle for landing, engine quit, too low for restart. Type fuel system vapor locks at idle

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
