## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL BY THE PILOT. THE SELECTION OF UNSUITABLE TERRAIN IS A FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - soft
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff - roll/run
  - object - fence

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE PILOT LANDED IN A FIELD, THINKING IT WAS AN AIRSTRIP. AFTER TOUCHDOWN, HE REALIZED HIS MISTAKE AND ATTEMPTED TO TAKEOFF. THE SOFT TERRAIN PREVENTED THE PLANE FROM ACHIEVING LIFTOFF SPEED. THE PILOT SAID HE LOST CONTROL DURING THE TAKEOFF ATTEMPT, THE PLANE STRUCK A FENCE AND THE EMPENNAGE WAS BROKEN AT THE FIRST BULKHEAD FORWARD OF THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900918040769A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900918040769A), Sep 18, 1990: Cessna 150M, Marietta, OK, Substantial damage. Landed in a soft wheat field mistaken for airport. Unable to takeoff skidded into a fence separating the empennage.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
