## Probable cause

AN INADVERTENT DESCENT INTO THE GROUND WHILE CONDUCTING A NON-PRECISION INSTRUMENT APPROACH, AS A RESULT OF THE PILOT FAILING TO STOP HIS DESCENT AT MDA. A FACTOR IS LOW VISIBILITY DUE TO FOG.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with terrain/water, approach - faf/outer marker to threshold (ifr)
  - weather condition - fog (contributing factor)
  - minimum descent altitude - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

WHILE CONDUCTING A LOCALIZER-ONLY APPROACH IN DENSE FOG, THE PILOT DESCENDED BELOW MINIMUM DESCENT ALTITUDE (MDA) AND COLLIDED WITH THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 400 YARDS SHORT OF THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD. SHORTLY AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT COLLIDED WITH A PIECE OF FARM MACHINERY WHICH DESTROYED THE AIRCRAFT.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
