## Probable cause

A COMPLETE POWER LOSS FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS: UNSUITABLE TERRAIN ON WHICH TO CONDUCT AN EMERGENCY LANDING.

## Analysis

WHILE ON A PERSONAL FLIGHT, THE PILOT WAS DESCENDING FROM 7,500 FEET MSL TO 6,000 WHEN A POWER LOSS OCCURRED. EXECUTION OF EMERGENCY PROCEDURES WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN REGAINING POWER AND THE PILOT CONDUCTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A SOFT STUBBLE FIELD. DURING LANDING ROLL, THE NOSE GEAR FAILED AND THE PROPELLER AND WINGS WERE DAMAGED BY GROUND CONTACT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, maneuvering
  - reason for occurrence undetermined
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920209004919A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920209004919A), Feb 9, 1992: Cessna 172, Delta, CO, Substantial damage. Engine quit after descent to lower altitude. Crash landed in stubble field. Cause power loss not addressed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
