## Probable cause

AN INADVERTENT STALL. A FACTOR WAS: THE PILOT'S DIVERTED ATTENTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, maneuvering
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - diverted attention, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE PILOT IN COMMAND WAS GIVING THE SECOND PILOT A CHECKOUT IN A TAILWHEEL EQUIPPED AIRPLANE. THEY WERE PRACTICING TOUCH AND GO LANDINGS AT A PRIVATE USE AIRPORT. WHEN A SECURITY GUARD DROVE DOWN THE RUNWAY TO GET THEIR REGISTRATION NUMBER, THEY PULLED THE AIRPLANE UP TO 50 TO 100 FEET AGL AND MADE A STEEP RIGHT BANK. THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S ATTENTION WAS DIVERTED OUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE. WHEN HE LOOKED BACK OUT THE FRONT, THE AIRPLANE WAS BEGINNING TO STRIKE THE GROUND. THE AIRPLANE OWNER AND OPERATOR SAID THE AIRPLANE ENTERED A FULL POWER, ACCELERATED DEPARTURE STALL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930425017089A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930425017089A), Apr 25, 1993: Bbavia 7ECA, Fort Worth, TX, Substantial damage. Distracted on takeoff by security guard. Pulled up in steep bank and stalled. Not authorized to use private strip.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
